Christmas Dilemma: Real Or Plastic Tree? Why Not DIY?

“Jingle bells, jingle bells”…Christmas is just around the corner. Don’t know about you, but I’m pretty excited.

Soon, it’ll be all about Christmas decoration, Christmas presents, Christmas holiday…Christmas tree…

The Christmas tree is very important part of the holiday. To decorate it is a real art.

It brings joy not only to the kids, but to all of the family. (Even to the cynical members of it).

But before you decide how to decorate your Christmas tree this year, you should decide which tree to bye:

  • the plastic one
  • or the real one.

It’s a real dilemma. The eco lovers will vote immediately for the plastic one. The tradition lovers will say “Plastic tree, no way. I want a real one”.

So, I decided to take a quick look at the advantages and disadvantages of the two kind of trees.

Keep it real

real Christmas treeI remember when I was a child and my father was bringing a real huge (to me) Christmas tree. It was smelling like forest and I couldn’t wait to decorate it with all the Christmas toys I had. It was such a pleasure. I really enjoyed having this tree in my room… for about a week. After that it was starting to dry, the needles were falling on the floor… My mother had to clean the carpet every day. Everything was getting not so joyful. In the end the tree just “died” and my father threw it in the garbage.

So, that’s the thing with the real Christmas tree – it’s wonderful until it dies in your room, in front of your eyes.

But, there’s another option if you insist on having a real tree for the holiday. You can bye a tree with it’s roots. It’ll be fresh the whole December and in January you can put it out of the pot and plant it in the garden or in the park, if you don’t have your own garden. Just choose a tree which suits to the growing conditions you have. A Norway sort of tree can grow to 30 metres, so you should have a large garden. The more modest 12-metre Korean treeabies koreans a better bet for smaller plots.

You can take care of it and next Christmas you can decorate it again. This time it’ll make not only your Christmas nicer and warmer! My grandma planted a Christmas tree in her yard a few years ago. Now it’s a big tree. We enjoy it not only during the winter holiday, but the whole year long.

Go for an artificial tree

Plastic Christmas treeAfter few years of “killing” Christmas trees my mother said “stop” and bought an artificial tree. In fact, it was nice – perfectly symmetrical. We decorated it and enjoyed it for a month. In January we took it to peaces and put it in the closet. We put it together in the bigining of the December. We decorate it in a different way every year, so it’s not the same Christmas tree for us.

But buying an plastic tree may be not as green as it seems

The faux tree is probably made by petroleum-based products, PVC, polyurethane foam and steel. In this case your plastic tree is not environmental friendly at all! It’s also not good for your health to keep such a tree at home, especially if you are allergic to some of the products.

Besides of that many of the plastic trees are made in Chine, where using kids in manufacturing is a common practice. You don’t want to have a tree, made by a kid, for whom Christmas is just another working day, do you?

DIY-Christmas tree – why not?

ralkaReal tree or faux tree?

If you still can’t decide, I offer you a third option – why don’t you made your own Christmas tree this year?

If your a DIY maniac, you’ll love the idea, I’m sure. If you’re not, just think about it. You can make your own unique Christmas tree. You can arrange it on your own way, so it fits the furniture and colors in the room. Here are a few ideas of a home made Christmas tree I really like.

Tree from green plastic bags

You cut the bags into strips and glue them on a cardboard in the form of big triangle. You can use also napkins. Just don’t put candles near your Christmas tree :).

This is the perfect tree, if you live in a small apartment and you don’t have a lot of space for a real tree. You can put this one on the wall.

See how to make it here.

Spool Christmas tree

To make this mini DIY tree you need

  1. 25 skinny wooden spools
  2. 1 vintage wooden spool
  3. and a crystal star trinket pin

You can see here in details how to make it. If you don’t have enough wooden spools, my suggestion is to try with corks.

Wooden tree

I recommend the wooden tree to these ones from you who are able to use saw (I’m not, that’s why I’m warning you). If you manage to do it, you’ll have a really beautiful and interesting Christmas tree.

I’ll definitely try to make one of these Christmas trees this year. What about you? I can’t wait to receive your feedback after you try some of the ideas!
