Have you noticed a nasty and persistent smell of mold coming from your carpet? It could be due to the carpet being left damp in a particular area or as a whole, or as a result of incompetent carpet cleaning.
Anyway, you should take care of removing any mold and stopping it from growing. The same goes for the odor it causes. In order to get rid of the pungent stench of mold emitted from your rug or carpet, you can call your local, trusted professional carpet cleaning company, or you can try one of the DIY methods. Remember, that mold and mildew can permanently damage your carpet and the padding underneath it if left unmanaged. It can also cause some mild to serious health problems, especially for people who are allergic to mold or those suffering from asthma. To try out this very efficient and completely safe method to remove mold odor from a carpet, you will need a vacuum cleaner (wet or dry), some white vinegar, baking soda, and some carpet padding.
So, first of all, it is most probably the padding underneath your carpet which is emitting the smell because the mold is growing there. You need to remove any furniture on top of the carpet or rug and remove the moldy padding, replacing it with a new piece of padding.
If you have a wall-to-wall carpet, you will probably need pliers or a crowbar to grab and grip the carpet. Make sure you wear work gloves, to keep your hands safe during this process. Roll the carpet to the wet spot and cut the damaged moldy padding with a razor knife. Then get the vacuum cleaner and clean the entire affected area as well as the bottom part of the carpet before replacing the carpet padding. Before you proceed with the new piece of carpet padding, sprinkle the affected area of the floor and around it with baking soda. Then place the new piece of padding on top and tape it down. To avoid the growth of any leftover mold, sprinkle the new padding and the surrounding area before rolling the carpet back on top of it.
If you don’t know exactly where the mold may be growing, but you know the odor is coming from the carpet, you can give it a very easy and natural cleaning to kill off any mold and the odor it causes. Get a big bucket and mix half a cup of baking soda with 2 cups of vinegar and two cups of cool water. The chemical reaction between the acid and the base will cause some serious bubbling up, which is why you should use a big bucket.
Use a soft brush, a sponge or a clean towel and carefully wash the carpet by gently rubbing in the solution. Make sure you don’t oversaturate it, though, because it can worsen the problem with the mold. After washing it, soak up as much of the liquid with paper towels, and let the carpet dry out completely. After that, vacuum the washed area. If the smell persists, you should try sprinkling the carpet or the smelly area thoroughly with baking soda and letting it sit overnight. Vacuum the carpet thoroughly on the next morning, and the odor should be gone.
