Yesterday I visited the new home of a friend of mine. And I just loved it. Just imagine – light living room with big sofa, green fridge, a frisky dog and a boyfriend, repairing some stuff.
She put a beautiful glasses for wine on the table and the atmosphere became even better. I asked myself the question
- “What’s the magic that makes one home cozy”.
- And my answer was: The people and the little things around.
So, I made a list of a few things for a warm, cozy home:
Pillows, pillows, pillows
Once a friend of mine came to my bedroom and said “Wow, you have more pillows on your bed than me and my boyfriend put together.” Yes, I have a lot of pillows. I bought some of them while searching for the most comfortable pillow to sleep on. Others I got spontaneously, because I found them beautiful. I just love decorative pillows with bird prints. I have three of them.
A nice idea for the summer is to put a few pillows on your terrace, if you have a bigger one. You can sit there and drink wine with friend or cuddle with your boyfriend/girlfriend.
Flowers
I like flowers a lot. All kind of them – roses, daisies, sunflowers… I love both receiving and gifting flowers. Sometimes as a see someone selling flowers on the street I buy myself a bouquet and put it on the table in the living room. The only bad thing about flowers is that I’m allergic to some of them and I sneeze a lot. So, if you have the same problem, don’t put flowers in your bedroom, is my advise.
A nice option of the bouquets, which don’t last long, is a flower in pot. But you should take care of it. I “killed” a rose once, so now I’m considering getting a cactus.
Not practical, but beautiful things
I’m not a big fan of houses, filled with a lot of useless things – souvenirs, little statues etc. Most of them keep a lot of dust. But some of them could be really beautiful. Especially if they’re hand made and unique. I saw a few examples of beautiful little things yesterday at my friend’s home. And I really want to share them with you. You can copy them in your home or get inspired and create your own little masterpieces.
A glass bowl filled with corks
If you a wine lover, you can open a bottle with your eyes closed. But what do you do with all the corks after you finish the bottle?
Instead of throwing them away, you can put them in a glass bowl. It becomes a nice home decoration.
You can fill the bowl also with other things like buttons for example.
And what about a jar fulled with sweets or gummy bears?
I’ve always wanted to have a big jar of sweets in my home. As I was a kid my mother tried to keep one of those at home, but I and my brother ate a lot of candies and didn’t want to have dinner. That thing hadn’t changes as I grow up.
But if you’re not such a sweets lover, you can keep a jar of candies at your home. I’ll make your place looks like Alica in wonderland’s place.
Candles
I’m not such a big fan of candles, because I’m a forgetful person (and it’s dangerous to forget candles at home, you know). But if you’re more careful, candles can make a really cozy atmosphere at your home. Candles are not for romantic evening only. You can light a few in the bathroom, while taking a warm bath or in the living room when you have a guest for dinner. They’re a nice choice if you’re making a home party, too. But just for a little party. If you’re expecting a lot of people, someone could push accidentally a candle and…you know what’s next.
A picture, drawn by you or your kid
When I was 7 years old I painted an autumn leaf, which my dad put in a frame. I was so proud to look at it hanging on the wall of the living room.
I’m not a painter now and I’m not sure if this drawing was a masterpieces, but it made me feel great. Why don’t you do something like this for your kid? It would be a nice decoration to your home, too.
Some parents even allow their children to sketch on the wall.
If you have a drawing gift, you can put some of your own pictures in frame and hang it on the wall.
A nice carpet
The carpet is a very important part of a room’s decoration. It’s a picture not for a wall, but for the floor. Choosing a nice carpet is not as easy, as you may think. The size, the color, the material – everything matters. My advise is – when you decide to buy a carpet, choose one that not only fits with the cardigans and furnitures, but is also made from a material, which is environmental friendly.
Stores offer a lot of rugs, which are promoted as “easy to be cleaned” or “stain resistant”. But what does “stain resistant” actually means. When pull wine on your carpet, would it be really easy to clean it. I believe not. If this little accident happens, it’s better to search for professional carpet cleaning help.
