Life is all about making choices. To go or not go to the beach this weekend? To buy or not to buy one more pair of shoes? I’m just kidding. Now, let’s talk serious.
The decisions we make define who we are. They change our lives for good or bad. They lead us to unknown places and meet us with new people. Sometimes we are happy about them and sometimes not. Sometimes we make mistakes that can’t be fixed. Sometimes we feel sorry for something we’ve done or something we haven’t done.
We spend a lot of time thinking what if I “have gone to college” or “got married to my high school sweetheart” or “have changed my job when I had a chance to”.
But why don’t you try thinking of your mistakes as lessons you’ve learned. The more bad decisions you’ve made, the more you’ve learned. Here’s a list of the five most important lessons I’ve learned from my mistakes. I hope it will inspire you.
Life is too short for having a boring job
We spend 8 hours a day at work. It’s a lot of time – don’t dedicate it to something that’s not worth it. If you don’t like your job, boss or the working environment, quit. Don’t be afraid of ending up in McDonalds. If you have the right skills and you won’t be jobless for a long time. Many of us have high job expectations after graduating from college and reality hits them. If you don’t like your work, find another one. Gain experience. It’s easy to change jobs when you are in your 20s and you don’t have a family. It’s OK to quit your job and spend a year writing a novel, for example. It’s OK to leave your comfortable office and start your own business. Life is not all about earning money. It’s also about finding your calling.
Life is too short for being in a wrong relationship
Are you in a relationship? Are you happy with it every single day? Do you feel loved and supported from your lover? If you are not quite sure the answer to these question is “yes”, you are in a wrong relationship. A lot of people spend years in relationships or marriages they don’t feel happy and satisfied. Some of them are afraid of being single, others blame themselves for not being happy and settle down. Don’t be one of those people. If your relationship doesn’t bring you joy, leave it. Compromises are a part of every relationship, but if they are too much it’s not worth anymore. Being single is better than being with someone you don’t love.
Life is too short for not travelling
We are not trees and we don’t have roots. We need to travel and explore new places in order to find ourselves. I know not all of you have the time and money to travel the world. I don’t. Last summer I was saving money for a car so I didn’t go on a vacation. I felt like the saddest person in the world. When I got the money and bought the car I wasn’t happy. I had missed so many chances of adventures and travelling with friends. So, my advice is to travel whenever you can. Even if it’s for two days. It’ll make happier than anything else you could spend your money on.
Life is too short for spending the weekends cleaning your home
We go to work every day from Monday to Friday. In the evening we get back home tired and the last thing on our mind is home cleaning. Usually we leave it for the weekend. But cleaning on Saturday or Sunday is like going on a second job. I can think of at least 100 more pleasant things to do in the weekends. Rest a bit, have fun, meet with friends … and let someone else do the cleaning for you. Why don’t you consider hiring professional cleaners to do the job for you. I can assure you it’ll be one of the best investments you’ve ever done. After an hour or two, your place will be perfectly clean again and you can fully enjoy your free time!
Life is too short – eat dessert first
Life is too short to delay things that make you happy. If you want to buy a very expensive pair of shoes, buy it. If you enjoy fine meals, go to restaurant and order one or learn to cook. If you’ve ever wanted to have a dog, now’s the time to get one. Don’t say “I don’t have time, I’m too busy for…” Life goes by fast. You were busy yesterday. You are busy today. You will be busy tomorrow. One day you will wake up and you will be 70. Don’t let time goes by just like this. Have fun, eat ice-cream, fall in love. Today!
